Guidelines and Rules about Animals - Highway code

  • Animal (Hoarse) Transport :- Animal transport vehicle should all requirements according to rules and regulation. It must be safe, secure and good working order for the animals as well as other road user.  
  • Vehicle should have safety tools and clothing. You should avoid driving in dark with but if it unavoidable then whiting light fitted on front and red cloth or light fitted on rear of the vehicle.  

  • Horse riders:- under age of 14 must wear a helmet according to rules and regulation but some people are exempt to wear helmet for religious purpose. It must be fastened securely. You can learn more about exemption please click here.

  • Avoid riding horse in poor visibility or darkness. If it compulsory then wear bright and reflective cloth so other road user can you see you easily. Plus other equipment you should fix according to low. You can find those rules here.

  • Make sure following things before you take horse on the road.
    • Make sure that all tack fits properly and is in good situation.
    • Confirm that you are able to control the horse.
    • At all times ride with confident horse or not as much of nervous horses. If you believe that your horse will be panicky of traffic. Never ride a horse without both a saddle and bridle.
  • while you riding horse on the road you have to
    • Stay to the left side on the road.
    • aintain both hands on the reins except you are signalling.
    • Remain both feet in the stirrups properly.
    • Never carry another person on the same horse.
    • Never take anything which might concern your stability or get tangled up with the reins.
    • Never ride more than two side by side, and ride in single line on slim or busy roads and when riding round bends.
    • You must not take a horse onto a walking path or pedestrian area, and you must not take a horse onto a cycle lane. Always use a bridleway where practicable.
    • Keep away from roundabouts wherever possible. If you have to use them then you should 1. keep to the left side of the road and watch out for vehicles crossing your path to leave or join the roundabout. 2. Give signal right when riding crosswise exits to show you are not leaving. 3.Give left signal just before you leave the roundabout.
  • Rules for other animal
    • Never leave your dog out on the road on its own. Always use small lead for the dog when walking on the footpath, road or path shared with cyclists or horse riders.
    • It is advisable not to take out animals in the darkness, but if you do, then wear reflective outfits and make sure that lights are carried (white light at the front and red light at the rear of the herd).
